BLACK ROSES
BY SIMON ARMITAGE
(THEATRE ROYAL DUMFRIES)

July 2019

In the early hours of Saturday 11 August 2007, 21-year-old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were attacked. As a result of her severe head injuries Sophie never regained consciousness.

Black Roses is an elegy for Sophie, in which poet Simon Armitage gives her back her voice and the local cast reflect on what lessons can be learned and how even today, hate crimes come in many forms.

A powerful story about the killing of Sophie Lancaster, incorporating physical theatre and verbatim text interwoven throughout Armitage's lyrical language.
